About US
The Western Warriors Water Polo Club is run year-round at various locations around the Western Cape by directors Dean Rimmer and Alex Hawkins. They are ably assisted by some of WP’s finest coaches, and through various structures, cater to all levels of water polo, from Splash to Senior National Players.
The Warriors Polo Academy aims to equip each player with the personal skills and strengths to dominate their game – each session focuses on individual skill and is tailored to the players’ ability. With this approach, we aim to create players that can fit easily into any team set-up with a sound base of fundamentals and game-understanding.
The Club aims to provide real water polo value, expert coaching and a consistently fun, engaging and challenging environment for each player to develop his or her water polo.

The Academy focuses on providing players with the personal skills needed to compete in the wonderfully technical sport of water polo. So often, players are not afforded the opportunity to spend time honing these skills - we aim to give them the right instruction and the time to get the big concepts down!
We follow an 8 week programme, with an extra week thrown in on the end, to make up for any missed sessions. The season is charged at R150.00 an hour, and is paid up front in order to secure a place for the term.
Junior and Intermediate sessions are 1 hour long (total 8 hour season + 1 bonus hour), totalling R1200 for the term.
Senior sessions are 1,5 hours (total 12 hour season plus 1,5 hours bonus), totalling R1750 for the term. All sessions will be headed by Dean & Alex, assisted by our favourite coaches – Chad Gabriels, Nicole Haird & Craig Haird.
WHAT WE COVER IN OUR 8 WEEK PROGRAMME:
Body Positioning & Specialist Positions (Center Back & Center Forward)
Body position is a hugely important fundamental that is often overlooked. This goes for the youngsters, as well as Olympians! Power and capability in the water comes from correct body position through various different actions – playing without correct positioning is equivalent to walking everywhere on your hands… Naaaaat good!
Counter Attack
One of our favourites, a lightning counter can be a devastating weapon. Fortunately, its not just the domain of the quickest swimmers – vision, technique and mindset play a much greater role in being a good counter-attacker, and these things are eminently coachable!
Shooting
Bang bang, this one speaks for itself and is a player-favourite, of course!
In these sessions, we focus on not only generating power and accuracy across a range of different shots, but also better decision-making skills to improve shot selection. Taking the right shots will always land up in a higher scoring percentage, regardless of power!
Team Play & Tactics
In weeks 4 and 8, we pull it all together and look at how our individual skills fit into the team and match setting. Depending on the experience level of the squad, we will generally focus on one or two relevant strategic outcomes that need to be perfected, and will help our players execute these strategies from various positions in the pool.
Bonus sessions are free to all Academy members, and serve to make up for lost time if there were unfortunate sicknesses, injuries or holidays taken during the term. For those players who didn’t miss a session, it is purely an extra opportunity to train with friends. We generally focus on a few fun elements of weeks 1 through 8, and get some match time in at the end.
Weekday matches are offered to all Academy members and those who aren’t in the Academy – they are pay-as-you-go and tickets are purchased on our site here on a weekly basis, opening on Mondays. These sessions include 1 set of drills of 15 minutes, and then we split teams up evenly, and they battle it out for bragging rights. These sessions are great for our players to really get to know each other, and are huge fun (despite being highly competitive!).
Junior (U10-11) and Intermediate (U12-13) games are on Tuesdays, while Senior (U14-16) and Elite (Invitational) are on Thursdays.
